Medium DIY Framing or Online Ordering

Medium DIY Framing or Online Ordering

The following is a rough guideline for framing if you wish to keep costs down and are happy to put everything together yourself.

OTHERWISE …

If you prefer a more traditional full service, we suggest trying The Frameshop

Do Note:

If you are ordering online, you must let them know that you will be getting the artwork to them so they can fit the artwork into the frame. They will then provide this service at no extra charge.

This assumes you are wanting to frame a MEDIUM size artwork – IMAGE SIZE – approx 32cm x22cm on paper approx 38cm x 28cm

YOU WILL NEED:

  • A Frame
  • A Matboard – The matboard separate the artwork from the glass or acrylic glazing it also provides an aesthetically pleasing border. Mat boards are most commonly in shades of white or cream but you can get them in a variety of colours to complement your artwork – Should be Acid-Free or pH neutral.
  • A Mount Board – Much like the matboard, the mount board serves to protect the artwork – Should be Acid-Free or pH neutral.
  • Acid-Free or Strong pH neutral framing tape to fix the artwork to the board

Frames:

Standard size frames frames can be found at KMart, BigW, Spotlight — as well as eBay, Amazon etc

Matboard:

We have attached a jpeg for a standard 16 x 20 frame size. The opening size of 24.5 x 34.5cm will give you a nice even clear space all around the artwork and will also allow for the title and signature to be shown before you get to the edge of the opening.

We used the custom framing tool of https://www.frameshop.com.au/custom-matboards to create this jpeg. The “Outer size” is the size of a standard 16 x 20 frame. Whitecore option is adequate.

Your artwork will fit in either of these sizes but you will need to use a matboard similar to one of the two we have shown on the Jpegs – depending on whether you go for an A1 or a A2 frame.

If you use the FRAMESHOP for the mount, they are located at
85-89 Chapel St, Roselands NSW 2196.

There are however a number of online businesses, framers and artshops that provide the same service and we encourage you to shop around.

Also try: FoamBoards Australia (*Tip: choose to add framing tape)

Mount Board:

We also recommend using an acid free or pH neutral backing board (can also be ordered from FrameShop at the same time you order your matboard) this should be the same size as the matboard.

As for matboard, there are a number of online businesses, framers and artshops that sell mount board and again we encourage you to shop around.

Framing Tape:

Can be purchased from Frameshop, Eckersleys and other online businesses, framers and artshops.
